Fire Hazards from self-heating at Composting and Waste Processing Sites
نویسندگان
چکیده
Fires involving materials being stored or processed in bulk can have severe impacts on the local communities and the environment. It is important that site managers at municipal recycling facilities (MRFs) are aware of all the potential fire hazards that exist on their sites in order for them to produce a comprehensive fire safety plan and an effective risk assessment. This article is intended to highlight the potential fire hazards that exist on sites that handle large quantities of combustible waste, focussing particularly on the hazards arising from selfheating leading to spontaneous combustion. It does not cover hazardous waste disposal facilities. The focus of this article is to outline common fire problems in material stockpiles. A future article will discuss fire risks from waste processing at MRFs.

Co-composting of eggshell waste in self-heating reactors: monitoring and end product quality.
Industrial eggshell waste (ES) is classified as an animal by-product not intended to human consumption. For reducing pathogen spreading risk due to soil incorporation of ES, sanitation by composting is a pre-treatment option. This work aims to evaluate eggshell waste recycling in self-heating composting reactors and investigate ES effect on process evolution and end product quality. Potato peel...
متن کاملAssessing the Stability and Maturity of Compost at Large-scale Plants
Four different tests to assess compost stability were compared during green waste composting in windrows at a largescale composting plant. The tests used were: germination index, (based on seed germination); SOUR (specific oxygen uptake rate, respirometric method based on O2 consumption by the microorganisms); self-heating test, (reflecting the energy output from the aerobic process); and Solvi...

Sundberg, C. 2005. Improving compost process efficiency by controlling aeration, temperature and pH. Doctoral dissertation. ISSN 1652-6880, ISBN 91-576-6902-3 Biowaste composting is rapidly increasing, and many composting plants in Scandinavia have had problems with low pH during the process. The aim of this thesis was to develop methods to improve process efficiency in large-scale composting. ...

Background & Aims of the Study: One of the most important pollutants in drinking water, air and soils is heavy metals. It is very harmful for humans and other live organisms. The purpose of this study was the usage of a co-composting process for removal of heavy metals from municipal solid waste and sewage sludge. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was a condu...
متن کاملA Study on Solid Waste Management System of Dhaka City Corporation: Effect of Composting and Landfill Location
This study has analyzed the generation and characteristics of solid waste in Dhaka city, along with the associated environmental impacts and existing solid waste management practices. Special focus was given on the effect of composting on final disposal of solid waste and effect of landfill site location on transportation cost. An estimate of the future generation rate indicates that the presen...
